Pennsylvania Support Group for Family & Friends of Prisoners
This Pennsylvania Support Group was started when my lovely cousin decided to get himself into a pickle and get placed in a state prison on a three-strike rule. I was so mad at him that I didn’t want to talk to him or have anything to do with him. I was sold on my thinking: you did your crime now do your time alone.
Well issues arouse with his parents and I prayed about him and if I should have anything to do with him. I was left with no other option but to talk to him. It seemed like every church service focus was on helping and loving the lost and those incarcerated was also stressed.
I knew then where I had to be, but I didn’t know what I was about to face. Our own family members judged me for communicating with him and put me down for trying to help him change into the man I knew he could be. I was left in the dark and on my own. I had no support and I was hurting: how could I help him when I needed my own help? I had so much to face on my own! A visit alone consisted of what to wear, what to expect, what to take, and what not to take.
I was clueless about the whole system, but through this journey I have learned and I have graduated to helping others and making their journey easier. I know what I went through and now I want to give back and try to make this easier on others.
