How to get glasses in prison
I never knew how important glasses were until I had to wear them
Ever since I can remember, my brother wore glasses. When he was younger all they had were those black-rimmed glasses that took over half of his face. Even with the big black-rimmed glasses he was cute. He grew up and grew into his glasses and changed along the way. He went to prison when he was 32 years old.
I don’t know if he was wearing his glasses when he was arrested, however I do know that when I visited him initially he didn’t have any glasses. I couldn’t tell you exactly how long it took for him to get glasses, but I think it was months. When he did get them they may have been prison issued, or he had to buy them, or he made a deal with someone in prison to get them. His first set of glasses in prison were those big black-rimmed glasses.
Over the years I visited my brother and from time to time he had different kinds of glasses or no glasses. He never really told me how he got them and I never asked. I never thought about how he or anyone else with vision problems survived in prison. If you are far sighted you can’t read or play games; if you are near sighted you can’t see the television. I could understand how my brother and other inmates could have problems with the guards because they did not do something right because of their sight.
It wasn’t until I started wearing glasses that I starting thinking about how my brother must of struggled in prison without his glasses. If your loved ones wears glasses, make sure that he is wearing his glasses when sentenced. If a person has their glasses on when they are sentenced then they can take their glasses with them. If they didn’t have them, you would not be able to give them their glasses after they are incarcerated. Feel free to call the prison, case worker, warden, or anyone else at the prison to find out what the process is to get your loved one new glasses in case his are lost or broken.
Every time I put on my glasses I think of those that cannot see without their glasses. I never knew how important glasses were until I had to wear them.
